In 2010, as a new and eager documentary maker, I flew with a small team out to Japan to try and find this amazing, but elusive man, named Yukio Shige. He spends his time talking down suicidal people at a suicide hot spot in Northern Japan and had, back then, saved over 500 lives. When we eventually found him, we started filming him, but as we spoke no Japanese and he spoke no English, we just shot as much as we could and asked questions using Google Translate.

When we got back home to translate and edit the footage, we realised that he had found about his friend's suicide on camera during one of our interviews. We talked to more people about the suicide problem in Japan and created a short documentary touching on it. The UK newspaper, The Independent, featured the documentary on their channels.
